Surgical treatments can be extremely effective for restoring hair. Hair transplant surgery has been increasing in popularity since the 1950’s and the surgeons and technicians at Look Natural Hair Restoration have remained at the forefront of hair restoration by utilizing the latest technology.
Common Hair Transplant Methods
Typical hair restoration surgery options include FUT & FUE hair transplant methods.
FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation, and involves a strip of the scalp being removed from the back of the head. Under a microscope, the strip is separated into the individual grafts under a microscope, sometimes keeping two or three hair follicles together (follicular units) to maintain anatomical integrity. These grafts are then placed into the recipient sites that have been created using a small needle or scalpel. Although this is an older procedure, it is still considered the gold standard, yielding a higher number of grafts and a slightly higher growth rate.
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction, and is the newer method of graft extraction. It consists of removing the grafts individually with a biopsy type punch. The benefit of this procedure is that there’s no linear scar as there is with an FUT. The downside is that the graft yield and growth rate is slightly lower. After the grafts are obtained, they are gently placed into the recipient sites. The downside is that the graft yield and growth rate is slightly lower.
Other Types of Hair Transplants
Eyebrow hair transplant is best performed using the above FUT method, harvesting hair in a strip along the scalp, separated by follicles, and then placed in the recipient sites in the eyebrow area using a small needle or fine scalpel.
Beard hair transplant can be performed similarly to eyebrow hair transplant, but may also be done using the FUE method where the grafts are removed individually. During either procedure, only one or two hair grafts are used in order to most closely approximate the natural look and growth of a beard. When healed, the transplanted hair can be shaved, trimmed, grown or styled just as you would other facial hair.
