Medical tourism has become more popular over the last 5 to 10 years. After the Great Recession of 2008, patients really began to look for alternative locations to have medical care. This is especially true with cosmetic procedures. Many patients look to Mexico, the Caribbean or India as places to have their desired procedure.
For most patients, the reason to look overseas is cost. In doing the math, they figure even with the added travel cost they can save some money by going out of the country to have surgery. In addition, some destinations even offer recovery in “luxury accommodations” as part of the package. The prevailing belief is that the care is equal and the results are the same, so why not save some money?
Things to Consider Before Traveling to a Different Country for Cosmetic Surgery
As I have discussed in this blog before regarding hair transplant or any other type of surgery, these are very much “buyer beware” procedures. Overseas locations do not offer a pre-operative consultation, except for the day prior to surgery. At that point you have already spent the money and there is no turning back. However, a thorough consultation is a very important part of the process. It’s important to fully evaluate the candidacy of each patient and discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure.
The doctor you meet at the overseas locations may or may not be trained or board certified. The U.S., however, has one of the most stringent training and licensing processes in the developed world. The oversight in these destination countries is often lacking. Sometimes, you will see an American trained doctor running one of the facilities. Often the reason this person has left the U.S. is because he can no longer get a license here.
The procedure room and tools used in these countries are often unclean. I have seen multiple patients return from these locations with infected wounds. This causes a huge problem patients because they often have no one to follow up with in the U.S. Many plastic surgeons in this country will refuse to see patients that have had surgery overseas due to liability issues. Often, patients will have to pay out of pocket for these complications and end up spending more money than they would have if they had the procedure done in the U.S.
When you choose to have a hair transplant at Look Natural Hair Restoration, we will evaluate you at your free consultation and review your options. The procedure is done in a clean facility and our complication rate is minuscule. You will receive free follow up for as long as you need it.
